About the Map

Large portions of the map are ocean. Most of the land contains mountains and forests, while the remaining land grids have settlements and cultivated land.

Grids containing settlements or farmland are known as Shoen. Construction of farms or town buildings is only possible at Shoen.

Land

Only about 6.3% of the worldmap grids are Shoen.

Cultivated Land

Cultivated land may be:

• ricepaddies
• wheat fields
• mulberry fields
• cotton fields
• tea fields

The mulberry fields are used to produce silk.

Settlements

Settlements come in particular categories:

• market towns
• port towns
• mining towns
• temple towns
• shrine towns
• post stations
• courtesan districts
• castle towns
• palaces
• mansions

The settlement category determines which buildings you can construct and which units you can recruit.

Mines

Mines provide an income. There are 4 kinds of mines:

• gold
• silver
• copper
• iron

Markets

Some market towns specialize in the production of trade goods like porcelain or lacquerware.

Palaces

There are only 4 palaces in Japan. If your clan owns any of these palaces, then your Daimyo becomes a Kanrei. Owning the palace at Kyoto is one of the victory conditions. Your Daimyo can claim the title of Shogun, if your clan owns the palace at Kyoto.

Climate

Climate affects the weather in the game and weather in turn may affect battles.

A wet season means that rains are frequent in that climate zone. Rain and snow negatively affects the strength of missile units.

Typhoons

The Kyushu and Shikoku islands have an increased chance of typhoons. Typhoons are natural disasters that cause damage to settlements.

Land

You cannot move over mountainous terrain.

Sea

Your can only move over sea in a ship. A ship can be manufactured in a port.
