Religions

There are 3 different faiths in Japan:

Ikko

Ikko are Buddhist zealots of the Jodo-Shinsu sect.

Shinto-Buddhism

Shinto-Buddhism is the default religion of the population and most characters. Buddhism in Japan is a syncretism of Buddhism with old Shinto beliefs and customs. Most Buddhists belong to the Tendai or Shingon schools.

Kirishitan

Kirishitan is the Christian faith. Jesuit missionaries will arrive in Japan in the year 1543.

Religious Inspired Rebellions

When the religion of the population in a settlement differs from the religion of the Daimyo that owns that settlement it causes increased unhappiness.

This unhappiness can be alleviated with repression through entertainers or construction of some settlement buildings. Lack of food in a Han can also increase unhappiness. Religious differences combined with lack food can result in a negative happiness in a settlement. With negative happiness there is the risk of rebellion.

Should a rebellion occur, then you will be unable to recruit soldiers from that settlement and you will be unable to collect taxes from that settlement. A severe rebellion can also make the settlement break away from the Han it was connected to. Such a rebellious settlement if left undefended can be conquered with ease by an enemy.

Ikko

In some cases a rebellious settlement may convert to the Ikko faith. The Ikko will form lagues of rebels known as Ikko Ikki. These Ikko Ikki tend to spread.

Religious Conversion

Sohei and Komuso are most effective at converting, when they are stationed in a temple town.
