Factions

Factions exist in various forms. Factions can vary in terms of culture, economic type, military type and form of government. There are 14 different cultures, 8 different economic types, 3 military types and 4 forms of government. Each aspect determines how a faction appears on the map and how a faction behaves.

Usually speaking factions will look after their own interest, but that does not stop factions from allying with other factions. The senate should be aware of that before they declare war on a faction. Factions of the same culture are more prone to help eachother than those factions of other cultures. Some factions are easier to positively influence than other factions. The hostility of a faction towards Rome also differs, not all will try to invade Roman held territory, while war with yet other factions may be inevitable.

Culture

Culture determines the appearance of a faction and what kind of military units are available to that faction on the battlefield.

Economic Types

The economic type determines the economic focus and style of trade of a faction and it partially determines the appearance of a faction.

Military Types

The military type determines the military focus of that faction. For example Carthage is a maritime power and so will build a large navy, while Numidia will focus on raising a large cavalry. Those factions whose military type is foot will try to raise mostly infantry troops.

Government Types

The government type determines the diplomatic behaviour and the behaviour on the grand strategic level of a faction.

The response of various types of governments varies. Tribes tend to be small entities in the world and while most are hostile, few will actually seek to invade Roman territory. Most of them are largely defensive. Tribes tend to be more easily coaxed than factions with other forms of government. Kingdoms will cease to be a cohorent fighting force once their capital is taken. Dominions are often the most openly hostile factions, but they tend to make many enemies and their dynasty is more prone to infighting.
